The Consortium for the Supply of Water and Sanitation in the Central Area of Asturias (Water Consortium) was constituted on March 29, 1967 and is made up of:
The Consortium is a government corporation with all the characteristics of a Local Entity, having its own legal status, which is governed by its own Statutes and, on a supplementary basis, by the Local Legislative System.
Basically speaking, the Consortium renders the following services.
It currently supplies drinking water to the syndicated Municipal Councils of the Central Region of Asturias, covering the needs that these are unable of provide with their own resources. This service includes the functions of capturing, regulating and treating the water and channelling it via conduits and pipelines to the urban municipal storage facilities. Furthermore, it directly supplies large-scale industrial consumers such as Arcelor, Asturiana de Zinc, Corporación Alimentaria Peña Santa S.A., Du Pont de Nemours, etc.
In order to avoid wastewater being returned untreated to the natural environment and thereby improving the quality of Asturias’ rivers and coastline, an entire network of installations, interceptor sewers and wastewater purification plants was created by which wastewater, be it urban or industrial that can be mixed with its urban counterpart, can be transported and purified. This system ensures that when it is returned to the natural environment (rivers or sea) it is of the desired quality. The Consortium manages the operation and maintenance of the infrastructures that, by agreement with the Principality of Asturias, it is commissioned to carry out.
