The Rioseco Drinking Water Treatment Plant was designed to handle a maximum capacity of 3,200 litres/second (with plans afoot for increasing this to 4,800 litres/second in the near future) . Untreated water is brought up to drinking standards using the following processes:
Peroxidation using chlorine, settling, filtration through a sand-bed and final disinfection, also achieved via the injection of chlorine . The plant is also equipped with sludge treatment facilities that use gravity thickening and filter press drying techniques and processes
